The Mesa Santa Barbara

Back to Community

Stretching from roughly the Santa Barbara Harbor on the east, to Arroyo Burro Beach County Park on the west. And from the shore inland several blocks, Santa Barbara’s Mesa neighborhood is one of the city’s youngest, most diverse areas.

Home to Santa Barbara City College and three public schools, this is a wonderful enclave for students and families. Making it even more desirable are its beautiful parks, including two overlooking the ocean, and its retail hub providing shopping, services, and family-friendly restaurants.

The Mesa’s Shoreline Drive hosts blufftop homes offering panoramic ocean, island and sunset views above Ledbetter Beach. Take a walk or drive along this scenic stretch of coastline road and feel another reason for the Mesa’s popularity is its weather. Summer temperatures average 10 degrees or so cooler than those in downtown Santa Barbara, while winter temperatures are often 10 degrees warmer.

An indicator of how community oriented this neighborhood is, there are two community associations: The Mesa Village Planning site, an informational hub created and run by a volunteer group of Mesa Architects, and OMNI, The SB Mesa Neighborhood Associaton, Inc., “ . . . a grassroots organization that promotes and supports the quality of life” in the neighborhood.

There is rich history here. Prior to its relatively recent residential development, the Mesa was home to a Chumash village dating back 6,000 years, the area’s first lighthouse, a couple of notable mansions, a collection of farms, a landing strip that was to be the predecessor of today’s Santa Barbara International Airport, an oil field, and a religious commune.
