Family-friendly, peaceful, and convenient to schools, churches and all the shopping, dining and services of what Santa Barbarans call “upper State,” San Roque is roughly defined as the residential and commercial district between State Street and Foothill Road, and Alamar Avenue and Ontare Road.
Most of the homes in the neighborhood were built between 1925 and the mid-1960’s in a broad range of architectural styles, including English Tudor, Craftsman, Spanish and California Ranch and Bungalow. Many have been significantly remodeled, renovated, or even completely redesigned and rebuilt.
The area’s ambiance was not always one of peace and quiet, however. During the decade 1850-60 a notorious bandit, Jack Powers, and his gang of hoodlums took up residence on ranchland located in what is now the San Roque neighborhood and terrorized Santa Barbara and the stage route from Santa Barbara to San Luis Obispo. Powers and his pals were finally driven out by the threat of action by Army troops and the area became prime farm and ranchland before being subdivided.
With San Roque’s post war and beyond building boom catching the attention of developers and merchants, some of Santa Barbara’s most popular shopping centers were built. Loreto Plaza, Five Points and La Cumbre Plaza, for example, quickly became retail mainstays in the community.
