Mission Canyon Santa Barbara

Back to Community

While the ambiance of Santa Barbara’s Mission Canyon district can be felt in the area around the revered Mission Santa Barbara, the actual boundary of this unincorporated neighborhood is a few blocks north, at Foothill Road. Considered the most dramatic of Santa Barbara’s residential districts, the neighborhood comprises topography at the foot and slope of 3,900 foot La Cumbre Peak.

Homes in Mission Canyon enjoy being neighbors with rugged sandstone outcroppings, native flora, seasonal waterways, and hiking trails. Breathtaking views span the treetops and red tile roofs of Santa Barbara, and on the Pacific Ocean, Channel Islands, and the horizon. Modest cottages and bungalows built in the 1920s and 30s share the neighborhood with more recently constructed residences in a variety of architectural styles, from Spanish Colonial Revival to contemporary. Although most of the area is in an unincorporated part of Santa Barbara, and there are no amenities such as schools, shopping or dining, Mission Canyon homes are just minutes from downtown.

As mentioned, the magic of Mission Canyon begins at the Santa Barbara Mission, incorporates the nearby Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History and Rocky Nook Park, then continues to enchanted Santa Barbara Botanic Garden. Encompassing 65 acres, the gardens host around 1,000 species of rare and indigenous plants and trees.

Today, the residents of Mission Canyon enjoy perhaps more privacy and tranquility than can be found in any other Santa Barbara neighborhood, yet they appreciate proximity to all the amenities the city has to offer.
