History of the Hill

Largely uninhabited until the late 1800s, it became a sought-after location for the “titans of industry” who built grand mansions on its hilltops. The area gets its name from the forests of eucalyptus trees that were imported from Australia and planted by Frederick Forest Peabody on the road leading to his estate, Solana. Over 7,000 eucalyptus trees were planted, and the road was aptly named Eucalyptus Hill Road.
Solana, which means “sunny place” in Spanish, was completed in 1915 and became a Montecito showplace with its massive planting of acacia trees and beautiful yellow blossoms, and its grand mansion spanning over 20,000 square feet.
Other estates and their mansions were built by privileged owners such as George Owen Knapp, Cornelius Billings, and William Hutchinson Cowles.
