Eucalyptus Hill is one of the Santa Barbara area’s most prestigious neighborhoods. Its western section lies within the city limits of Santa Barbara, whereas its easternmost part is in Montecito. There are approximately 1,000 homes in the hillside community, ranging in size from large ranch-style to expansive estates.
It was in the late 1800s that a handful of wealthy Eastern U.S. industrialists began building mansions and establishing estates in the hilly area. A practice that caused at least one historian to refer to them as “The Hilltop Barons.” One of them was Frederick Forest Peabody, founder of the Arrow Shirt Company, who imported several thousand eucalyptus trees from Australia to be planted on his hilltop estate. Thus, the name “Eucalyptus Hill.”
